Iran played Egypt to a 1-1 draw at Seattle Stadium on Friday night, completing an unbeaten run in Group G but leaving its knockout-stage hopes dependent on results from other matches.

Egypt struck early through Mahmoud Saber in the fifth minute, putting Iran under immediate pressure in a match both teams approached with major knockout implications.

Team Melli responded quickly, equalizing in the 14th minute when Ramin Rezaeian reacted first after Egypt goalkeeper Mostafa Shobeir parried a shot into danger.

Iran had several chances to win the match, including a missed penalty by Mehdi Taremi and two efforts that struck the frame of the goal.

The most dramatic moment came deep into stoppage time, when Shoja Khalilzadeh appeared to score a late winner that would have sent Iranian supporters into celebration.

After a VAR review, however, the goal was ruled out for a narrow offside decision, turning what looked like a historic winning moment into heartbreak for Team Melli.

Iran finished the group stage with three points and a neutral goal difference after draws against New Zealand, Belgium, and Egypt. The result left the team waiting to see whether it would qualify as one of the best third-place finishers.

After the match, Iran again had to leave the United States immediately because of travel and visa restrictions, continuing a difficult tournament pattern that had already affected the team’s matches in Los Angeles.

Head coach Amir Ghalenoei criticized the conditions his team faced throughout the tournament, saying football should bring nations and cultures together and should be kept separate from politics.

Captain Mehdi Taremi also called the travel situation unfair, saying the team lacked proper recovery time and did not have all of its logistical staff available during the tournament.

Despite the frustration, Iran thanked Seattle for its hospitality in a handwritten locker-room note and thanked Iranian supporters for giving their hearts and voices to the team.

Ramin Rezaeian said the players had given everything for the people of Iran, adding that they deserved happiness after the effort and sacrifice shown during the group stage.
